The Right Fit: Purchasing the Best Shoe for Your Child
Monday, 30 March 2009 21:41

Since feet are the foundations of our bodies, we would like to share a few tips on how to find the perfect fit for your child, in order to create a safer, healthier, stress-free environment. Below are a few things to consider when making your trip to the shoe store:

  • Use the sizing tools at the store to determine your child's foot length and width. If you don't know how to use the tool to its fullest potential, ask a store associate.
  • Do not be tempted to buy shoes too big for your child's foot so they can wear them longer. Children who do not wear the right size shoe growing up are more likely to have walking issues and foot pain in the future. Saving a buck now could cost you larger medical bills in the future.
  • Choose a firm yet flexible sole, so your child has support with movement.
  • To prevent skinned knees and twisted ankles, soles with a tread-like pattern are more likely to gain traction on slippery surfaces.
  • You should be able to make a thumb-impression at the toe of your child's shoe about an inch or a half inch deep.
  • Watch your child walk in the shoes. Their heel should not slide out and their gait should look natural.
  • If your child is trying on boots above the ankle, it is exceedingly important to ask them if their heels come up further than normal. A child is at a much higher risk of tripping or twisting an ankle in boots that are too big.
  • Avoid shoes with raised heels if you can. Your daughter may look cute and sassy, but she is also more likely to trip and will not receive the healthiest support she can for her growing feet.
  • If you can't choose, by all means, let your child make the final pick! There's no use in purchasing a pair your child won't enjoy and be proud to wear.
Now, go forth and nurture those baby feet!
